Mustangs Alumni Night a Success

by Amanda Rogers

Thirty-one former Mustangs basketball players attended the inaugural Mustangs Alumni Night at Montgomery County Community College on Friday, April 13. The night featured two basketball games, pitting the current men’s and women’s basketball squads against former athletes who played at the College between 1974 and 2011.

Mustangs Alumni Night drew a number of well-known and distinguished alumni, including Montgomery County Sheriff Eileen Behr ‘76; Desimone’s Café manager, Micky Delliponti ’79; Food and Drug Administration investigator, James McEvoy ’76; and the owner of Flocco’s in Conshohocken, Don Flocco ’75. As a special guest appearance, College President Dr. Karen Stout played on the women’s alumni team.

One of the more recent alumni to participate was Adam Jones, who played for the Mustangs in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Jones made quite an impact on the Mustangs program, scoring a career total of over 500 points and earning the Offensive Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year awards in 2011.

Both the men’s and women’s competitions drew a significant number of spectators, tallying more than 120 participants, players and spectators during the evening. On the women’s side, the current athletes defeated the alumni, while the men’s game resulted in a victorious alumni squad.

2012 Student Challenge

To date, 170 students have given about $3,400 to the 2012 Student Challenge. The campaign will continue until June 30, 2012.

All donations to the Student Challenge support the Alumni Scholarship Fund. To commemorate their graduation year, graduating students were asked to make a $20.12 donation, and, in return, they received alumni t-shirts. This annual campaign is a wonderful opportunity for students to invest in the future of the College and say “thank you for their educational experiences.” The campaign is also an opportunity to educate current students about the importance of remaining involved as alumni — this includes supporting the College philanthropically.

On May 16, graduating students enjoyed a picnic at College Hall following their final instructions for commencement. They also had the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Student Challenge.
