Spring Sports Wrap-Up

Awards Reception

The Third Annual Mustangs Awards Reception was held on May 10 in the Parkhouse Hall Atrium. President Dr. Karen A. Stout presented Mustangs pins to current and former Mustangs who graduated. She also presented second-year sophomore volleyball and basketball player, Brianna Musselman, with the Student-Athlete Service Award.

Coaches from each of the seven Mustangs athletics teams highlighted team and individual accomplishments and awarded a number of honors throughout the event. Additionally, Director of Athletics Bruce Bach presented the annual departmental awards: the male and female Mustang Awards, the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year Awards, and the Coach of the Year Award.

Award Winners

Men’s Basketball: Offensive Player of the Year, Darnell Clowney; Defensive Player of the Year, Rasahn Brinkley; and Coaches Award, Dan Diorio.

Women’s Basketball: Defensive Player of the Year, Dayna McCrewell; Coaches Award, Danielle Lillo; and Most Valuable Player, Brianna Musselman.

Men’s Soccer: Offensive Player of the Year, J.J. Natale; Defensive Player of the Year, Edgar Ojeda; and Coaches Award, Joe Mitsch.

Women’s Soccer: Most Improved Player, Samantha Caltabiano; Offensive Player of the Year, Avina Smith; and Most Valuable Player, Danielle Lillo.

Volleyball: Offensive Most Valuable Player, Brianna Musselman; Defensive Most Valuable Player, Melanie Angelucci; and “Soo Sick” Most Valuable Player, Samantha Reeves.

Baseball: Sportsmanship Award, John Iorio; Randolph Award, Eric Lewandowski; Most Valuable Player, Tyler Gregg; and Most Valuable Player, Kyle Gaffney.

Softball: Coaches Award, Jenna Murphy; Coaches Award, Jessica Tolton; and Offensive Player of the Year, Alyssa Butcher.

Department Awards: Male Mustang Award, Omar Askia, Men’s Basketball; Female Mustang Award, Briana Rodriguez, Volleyball; Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Tyler Gregg, Baseball; Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Brianna Musselman, Volleyball and Women’s Basketball; and Coach of the Year, Misti Volpe, Volleyball.

Baseball

For the first time since the team’s entrance into the NJCAA in 2008-2009, the Mustangs squad earned a spot in post-season competition this year with an overall record of 23-22-1 and a Region 19 record of 11-14-1. The team faced off against nationally ranked no. 1 Gloucester County College in the first round of the NJCAA Region 19 playoffs. The Mustangs were eliminated in the double header, losing 1-4 and 1-16.

Two athletes were awarded All-Region Honors. Freshman short stop Kyle Gaffney was named to the Third Team All-Region, and second-year sophomore center fielder Tyler Gregg was named to the Second Team All Region. Freshman catchers John Iorio and Eric Lewandowski earned the team’s Sportsmanship Award and Randolph Award, respectively, while Tyler Gregg and Kyle Gaffney shared the Most Valuable Player Award.

Softball

The softball team competed with club status in the NJCAA Region 19 this season, earning an overall record of 3-9. Freshman outfielder Jenna Murphy and freshman catcher Jessica Tolton earned the Coaches Award and freshman pitcher Alyssa Butcher was awarded Offensive Player of the Year.
